If there's one thing we've noticed recently, it's that more and more homeowners are starting their bathroom renovation journey with the same few questions.

"Can you fit us in next month?"

"We've already bought all the materials."

"We're trying to keep the whole thing under £5,000."

And honestly? They're all completely fair questions.

For most people, a bathroom renovation isn't something they do very often. In fact, many of our customers haven't updated their bathroom in ten, fifteen or even twenty years. A lot has changed in that time, from material costs and labour rates to lead times and product availability.

So, if you're thinking about renovating your bathroom this year, here are seven things we think every homeowner should know before booking.

1. Good Bathroom Installers Are Often Booked Further Ahead Than You Think

One of the biggest surprises for many homeowners is how far in advance bathroom installers are booked. We completely understand why. Once you've decided you want a new bathroom, you're excited to get started and naturally want the work completed as soon as possible.

The reality is that reputable bathroom installers are often booked several months ahead. At the time of writing this (June), we're currently booking projects into October.

Whilst waiting isn't always ideal, it often reflects the demand for quality workmanship and gives you valuable time to finalise designs, choose products and make sure everything is planned properly before work begins.

2. Your Budget Needs To Cover More Than Just The Visible Items

When people start budgeting for a new bathroom, it's easy to focus on the obvious items.

The toilet.

The basin.

The shower.

The furniture.

The tiles.

What often gets forgotten are all the things working behind the scenes that make the bathroom function properly.

Things like adhesives, grout, waterproofing systems, trims, pipework, waste fittings, flooring preparation, silicone, fixings and waste removal all form part of a professional installation.

Many homeowners are surprised by how much of a bathroom renovation budget is spent on the things you'll never actually see once the project is complete.

3. Buying Your Own Materials Isn't Always The Money Saver People Expect

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions we come across.

We completely understand why people choose to buy their own bathroom products. On the surface, it can feel like a great way to save money.

The challenge is that many homeowners understandably focus on the obvious items and don't realise how many additional components are needed to complete the installation.

We've seen projects where customers have purchased a beautiful bathroom suite but forgotten essential items needed to actually install it. We've also seen products arrive damaged, missing parts or simply not compatible with other elements of the design.

When that happens, work can grind to a halt whilst replacement products are sourced.

In some cases, we may not be the right fit for projects where all of the materials have already been purchased. That's not because we don't want to help. It's simply because we can't guarantee products we haven't specified or supplied ourselves, and it can make problem-solving much more difficult if issues arise during the installation.

Working with a company that designs, supplies and installs the entire project often removes a lot of that stress and uncertainty.

4. Hidden Problems Are More Common Than You Might Think

One thing we always explain to customers is that we don't truly know what's hiding behind the tiles until the old bathroom has been removed.

Thankfully, most renovations go exactly as planned.

Occasionally, though, we uncover old pipework that needs replacing, damaged plaster, rotten flooring or evidence of previous leaks.

It's one of the reasons we always encourage homeowners to have a little flexibility in their budget if possible. Whilst nobody wants unexpected surprises, identifying and fixing these issues now can save a lot of money and headaches further down the line.

5. No Two Bathroom Renovations Are The Same

Two bathrooms might look almost identical in size, yet require completely different levels of work. One project might be a straightforward replacement of existing fixtures.

Another might involve moving pipework, altering layouts, improving accessibility or creating a wet room. That's why it's almost impossible to provide an accurate quotation without seeing the space and understanding exactly what you're hoping to achieve.

Every bathroom, every home and every customer is different.

6. Making Design Decisions Early Can Save You Time, Money And Stress

It's amazing how many delays can be avoided simply by making key decisions before the installation starts. Choosing layouts, colours, finishes and products early helps everything run much more smoothly and reduces the risk of costly changes halfway through the project.

This is one of the reasons we offer our 3D bathroom design service.

Being able to visualise the finished bathroom before work begins helps customers feel confident in their choices and often highlights small changes that can make a big difference to the final result. A little extra planning at the beginning can save a lot of stress later on.

7. The Cheapest Quote Isn't Always The Best Value

It's completely natural to compare prices when you're investing in a new bathroom.

However, it's important to look beyond the bottom line and understand exactly what is included.

A lower quotation may not include certain materials, preparation work, waste removal or finishing touches. It may also reflect differences in product quality, guarantees or aftercare support.

Rather than asking, "Who's the cheapest?" we always encourage homeowners to ask, "Who gives me the most confidence that they'll do a great job?"

After all, a bathroom is one of the most used rooms in your home, and quality workmanship is something you'll appreciate every single day.

A Little Planning Goes A Long Way

A bathroom renovation is a significant investment, and taking the time to plan properly can make the whole experience far more enjoyable.

Understanding realistic budgets, allowing enough time for planning, making decisions early and choosing the right installer can all help your project run more smoothly from start to finish.
